This journey workshop is an amazing experience of Hawaiian culture unmatched by any other event in the Hawaiian Islands. You will learn the old Hawaiian Art of Lauhala. In this workshop you will be harvesting, cleaning and preparing the lauhala to weave. You will also learn how to repair lauhala mats and make a lauhala bracelet and/or fan.

The Lauhala journey workshop was originally inspired by our Traditional Hawaiian Lomilomi practice. Traditional Hawaiian Lomilomi was never practiced on a table but the floor or better yet on the ‘āina. Tables were brought in with Westerners. Our style of Iwi’ula lomilomi is done on the floor or ‘āina. Out of respect for traditional Hawaiian Lomilomi, our Lomi Practitioners are learning how to weave lomilomi mats. They have learned how to harvest, clean, make kuka’a, and weave lauhala in reverence for the mana and 'āina of Hawai’i.

The Haumana of Halau O Limaloa have been selected as the Caretakers of the Puhala and the Lauhala Mats of Pu’uhonua O Honaunau.

Trips are for students only, although they may bring their partners. Trips are held once a year, generally late August to early September.
