The KUMU (Teacher) of the KALAMA Foundation

upuni Iwi'ula is the Kumu of the KALAMA Foundation. He is 100% Kanaka Maoli. His lineage spans the island chain from Niuli'i to Ni'ihau. Aupuni was born and raised in Kalihi, O'ahu. He was educated at the prestigious Punahou School graduating in 1971. From there he continued his education to Paris, France and completing his undergraduate in French Literature and graduate studies in Public Administration both from the University of Washington. His mother's side of the family is from Ni'ihau, Nualolo, Hanapepe and Niuli'i. His father's family is from Mo'ili'ili and Holualoa.

Kumu was asked to teach old Hawaiian Spirituality in 1972, but did not accept the kuleana until 1992. He is only the second male to teach HO'OMANA in his family's style in over 200 years. He teaches deep Hawaiian culture in a contemporary manner. His students are Hawaiians and non-Hawaiians who may have been born, lived or have an affinity with Hawai'i. They all have a sacred and spiritual relationship with the 'aina and mana of Hawai'i.

Last year he asked several of his haumana to step forward and become kumu and they did. Although the kuleana of these kumu is huge their commitment is strong. 'Onipa'a kakou.

This year we would like to honor the second group of Kumu of the Halau. Leihoku Miller, Maile Mergaert, Mahealani Rieman and Kolea Loeken. Welcome and mahalo for stepping forward and becoming Kumu. They join the first group of Kumu: Keali'i Stibbards, Kehau Urich, Lehua Kopczynski and Hula Connery in the expansion of the HO'OMANA Classes. Aloha and mahalo to everyone.

Check the Halau Calendar for the specific dates, times and tuition schedules.
